MACKINAC ISLAND, MICHIGAN

Mackinac Island is an island and the town with the same name in the state of Michigan. Before European settlers, the island was settled by an Indian tribe and in the 19th century it was a strategic position for the fur trade on the Great Lakes. In the end of the 19th century, it became a popular tourist destination of the American upper class.

During summer, lots of great cultural events are taking place, among others – Liliac Festival which lasts for around 10 days and it finishes with a great parade of horses and carriages, two large sailing regattas with a long tradition ( since 1920s)and many other events. Motor traffic is forbidden on the island, so the whole transport comes to cycling, horse riding, driving a horse carriage and walking. Over 80% of the island is protected and it belongs to Mackinac Island Nature Park.

Climate: Summers are moderately hot with average temperatures of 21-27 C.

Mission Point Resort

Mission Point Resort is an award-winning hotel located on the shores of Mackinac Island. It was named the best resort hotel in the Midwest region for 2020. It is located on the west side of the island and offers its guests the best of the island. Within this hotel there are 5 restaurants, outdoor pool, spa, gym, boutique and shop, playground for children. In addition, guests can enjoy cricket and tennis courts, as well as the on-site cinema.
The employer has a long tradition of hiring J1 students and students can work in a variety of positions and hourly rates go up to $ 14. Accommodation is provided to all students for $ 110 per week and the price of accommodation includes three meals.

Grand Hotel

Grand Hotel has a rich and long history. It was built long time ago in 1887, as a holiday resort for the guests from Detroit, Chicago and Montreal.

Interesting facts:

1. Hotel has officially the longest porch (front porch) in the world– over 200 meters
2. Since establishing until today, hotel has been visited by over 5 million guests.
3. Famous writer Mark Twain lectured in the hotel casino in 1985.

Employer provides housing for all students just for $119 a week and students will have 3 meals a days included in the housing price.
